Aesthetics wasn’t something I ever imagined I would be doing when I was working as a midwife in the NHS.
After 30 years working in the NHS, I retired from my midwifery career ( although I still work as a midwife doing agency shifts) and decided to take my clinical experience in a completely new direction.
I thought moving into Aesthetics would be relatively straight forward.
I was very wrong!
From Midwifery to Aesthetics
My years as a midwife, and just to say I continue to work as a midwife doing agency shifts, has given me many transferable skills.
Clinical assessment, anatomy knowledge, communication, listening to people, recognising potential complications and , perhaps most importantly making people feel safe and comfortable were all skills I brought with me.
But aesthetics was a completely different world.
There was and still is a huge amount to learn.
I needed to develop my understanding of facial anatomy, skin ageing, skin health, aesthetic treatments, products and treatment techniques.
And I quickly realised aesthetics isn’t simply about injecting or performing a treatment.
It’s about understanding the individual sitting in front of me.
The steep learning curve
One of the things I wasn’t prepared for was just how much there is to learn when you start your own aesthetics business.
There is the clinical side of course.
But then there is everything else.
Marketing
Social media
Doing my own accounts and managing profit and loss.
Building a client base
Looking after my clients with ongoing after care and treatments.
Managing the day to day business things like managing stock, keeping my room clean and well prepared, waste and sharps disposal, insurance and the list goes on.
Investing in continuous training keeping my knowledge up to date as well as learning how to do new things.
Running my own business can be exciting but it can also be challenging.
There have certainly been times when I’ve wondered what on earth I was doing!
But I have loved learning something completely new.
Why Aesthetics became important to me
I’m now 61, and I think my own experience of getting older has influenced the way I approach aesthetics.
Our skin changes.
Our facial structure changes.
Hormonal changes has affected my skin.
Sometimes the person I see in the mirror doesn’t quite match how I feel inside
For me aesthetics isn’t about trying to make someone look 20 years younger.
It’s about helping people look good , feel good and feel confident in their in own skin.
I believe treatments are very individual and proportionate, rather than changing someone’s appearance completely.
From mobile aesthetics to my own clinic
Judy B Aesthetics has changed considerably over the last 3 years.
I originally started as a mobile clinician, but it was hard to maintain a sterile andclean environment.
I then moved into rented rooms before creating my own small, private home based aesthetics clinic in Redditch.
I love the environment I have created.
It’s quiet , relaxed and personal, giving clients a comfortable space where we can take our time discussing concerns and goals,
Having a home based clinic also means my business overheads are lower.
That allows me to keep my treatment prices affordable, which is important to me.
I believe looking after your skin health shouldn’t necessarily be an unaffordable luxury.
A different approach to aesthetics
As my knowledge has developed, so has my approach to aesthetics.
I’m particularly interested in helping mature women understand their skin and how they can support it as they age.
That includes looking beyond individual treatments and considering skin health as part of a bigger picture.
Depending on someone’s needs this might involve treatments like skin boosters, micro needling, chemical peels, facials , LED light therapy, massage as well as Botox and fillers.
Sometimes the best thing I can do is recommend a different approach or even recommend doing nothing at all.
