Would You Put Acid On Your Face?

Updated: May 16

Well yes you actually should!

Acids are often used in skin care because they can exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, unclog pores, and help with various skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.

Different acids have different properties and benefits, allowing for customized skincare routines tailored to individual needs.

However it is essential to use them properly and in appropriate concentrations to avoid irritation or damage to the skin.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid)

It has the ability to exfoliate the skin by penetrating deep into pores and breaking down excess oil and dead skin cells.

It is particularly effective for treating acne and blackheads as it is able to unclog pores and reduce inflammation.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) derived from sugar cane.

It exfoliates the skin by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells.

It is effective at treating various skin concerns , including acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin texture .

It also helps to stimulate collagen production improving the overall appearance of the skin and results in smoother, softer and brighter skin.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is another AHA. It is derived from milk.

Known for its exfoliating properties that help to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.

Lactic acid is gentler than Glycolic acid making it suitable for sensitive skin.

It too, is effective at improving skin texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and brightening the complexion, making it smoother and softer as

it also has moisturising properties helping to hydrate the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid helps to replenish moisture in the skin and is suitable for all skin types including sensitive and acne prone skin.

It has soothing and anti inflammatory properties making it beneficial for calming irritated or inflamed skin.

It works well in combination with other ingredients to to help hydrate and rejuvenate the skin promoting a more youthful and radiant complexion.

Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid is the purest form of vitamin C.

It is a potent antioxidant which is used in skincare to help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors such as UV rays and pollution by assisting our body to neutralise them.

These free radicals can damage cells, proteins and DNA and is associated with various diseases and the ageing process.

Skincare that contains ascorbic acid helps to brighten the complexion, fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots and even out skin tone as well as calm redness and irritation in the skin.

However, ascorbic acid can be prone to oxidation when exposed to air and light which can reduce its efficacy.

It therefore needs to be a stabilised form of vitamin C and stored correctly.

Retinoic Acid

Retinoic acid is the most potent form of Vitamin A.

Tretinoin is a topical form of retinoic acid available on prescription only.

Retinol is converted in the body to retinoic acid.

All forms of vitamin A, whether a retinol ester, o a retinoid, or a retinol or a retinoic acid work on the skin to:

Increase Cell turnover

Stimulate the fibroblasts in the skin to produce collagen

Regulates the production of sebum, the skin’s natural oil

inhibit the production of melanin and help fade hyperpigmentation, dark spots and other forms of skin discoloration.

Tretinoin is effective in treating acne by reducing inflammation and inhibiting the growth of acne causing bacteria.
